Our favourite English books

Today I want to highlight our English collection. I prefer to read English books and translations if the original is in a language I can’t read. That’s why I take great care curating this collection. These are five books I either love reading myself, or plan to read to my own children someday, since I do want to give them as many language skills as possible.

Peter Rabbit – A Tale of Four Seasons

Experience all the seasons in this enchanting book by Beatrix Potter. Join Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail as they adventure through their ever changing woodlands. The rich illustrations, and the surprise pop-up at the end make this a wonderful gift.

General Relativity for Babies

Are you planning a trip to space at the speed of light? Then this book is perfect to explain to your child why you will be gone for years and you will only come back when they’ve grown up while you’ve not aged a day! This funny science book is a great gift to parents who are scientists, or have an interest in general relativity. I must admit, after years of only pretending I understood anything about Einstein’s theory when I actually only knew the equation (E=mc^2), I finally got what it stood after reading this book.

The House at Pooh Corner

The house at Pooh Corner - voor

Christopher Robin is growing older, and now he spends his mornings doing education. This leaves Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and Rabbit to find things to do with each other. Through ten interconnected, gentle adventures they navigate friendships, build houses, organise search parties and make up new games. The tales acknowledge the inevitable passing of childhood while celebrating imagination and companionship.

The Handbook of Forgotten Skills

Handbook of forgotten skills - voor

This activity book is perfect to keep kids (and teens) away from screens. It offers all sorts of fun, but mostly handy skills to learn in a world where everything seems to move too fast to keep up. While, sure, you could just get a new piece of clothing when you rip a button, or get a pie delivered with an app, isn’t it nicer to be able to fix or do these things yourself? In this book you learn how to navigate with a compas, make a campfire, or even make fridge pickles!

Sisters of the Lost Marsh

Sisters of the lost marsh - voor

Grace, Willa and Freya live on a farm with their three younger sisters, their loving maternal grandmother, and their cruel father. He believes he was cursed because his late wife gave him six daughters. To make the best of things he has promised his eldest daughter, Grace, to a village elder in marriage. The older girls are allowed a night of fun at the mysterious Full Moon Fayre. That morning Grace hasn’t returned home. Willa decides to go after her, following the trail of the fayre through the dangerous Lost Marsh. To save her sister and reunite their family Willa will have to uncover well kept secrets and face her darkest fears.

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of green gables - voorkant

Marilla and her brother Matthew run a farm in rural Canada. To help out on the farm, and for some companionship, they sent word to a friend that they’d like to adopt a boy from an orphanage. Only, when Matthew goes to pick him up, he finds a red haired girl was sent in his place. That is our first meeting with Anne. To say she is imaginative is an understatement of the highest order. After debating it for a while, the siblings decide to keep her and raise her. This book is a wonderful coming of age story, wrapped up in the most marvelously this edition by Puffin Clothbound Classics.
